Three months on a stubborn cheek

She arrived having already done this twice. Two courses at other clinics, both aggressive, both brilliant for a month and then darker than the starting point. That history mattered more than the pigment itself: skin that has been provoked twice is primed to be provoked a third time, and the plan had to be built around not doing that.
We started at an energy low enough that she asked whether anything was happening. Nothing visible changed for the first three visits. What did change was the rebound — for the first time the pigment did not deepen between sessions, which told us the barrier was holding.
From session four the cheeks began to lift, unevenly at first, then together. By session six the deep patch along the left cheekbone had faded to a shadow visible only in strong side light, and her foundation was going on in one layer rather than three.
She now comes twice a year for maintenance and has kept the result for eighteen months. The honest note: the pigment is managed, not gone, and the daily sunscreen is doing at least as much work as we are.
